Cooperaratives’s role stressed
KATHMANDU, June 3

On the occasion of the 82nd ICA International Co-operative Day and the 10th UN International Day of Co-operatives, speakers at the program urged the government to help resolve the problems that are impeding the advancement of the cooperative sector. They also requested that the government initiate effective training and awareness programs to enhance competitiveness in the sector.

At the program, a representative of the Shree Mechi Cooperative, Jhapa, said that since some cooperatives recently fled with deposits, clients have become increasingly suspicious of the remaining cooperatives.

Chairman of the National Cooperative Bank, Rajeshwari Joshi, said that plans to construct a cooperative complex have remained unrealized. Programs on poverty alleviation can only be successful if they are launched through cooperatives, as cooperatives can sere the grass roots level of society.

Mohan Man Sainju, chairman of the Poverty Alleviation Fund, opined that cooperatives need to launch programs targeting the poor and promised to assist them if detailed and transparent programs that could directly benefit the poor are put forward.

Keshav Badal, a former minister, maintained that the government is not heeding fully the problems of this sector and demanded the establishment of a separate ministry to deal with the complex problems that are plaguing the sector.

Dr Dambar Narayan Yadav, a former education minister, said, “Effective programs, with vision and good intent, are that immediate need also funding of the development of the cooperative sector is meager and has not been able to address the problems of this sector.”

Dr Shankar Sharma, Vice Chairman of the NPC, said that cooperatives should be more pragmatic and should be more pragmatic and should harmonize their services. Training programs should be launched with minimum investment to achieve maximum output
